Digital Professional Learning and Development TELLAL Institute, UAE
As Senior Manager in Digital Professional Learning and Development, Sheryl is responsible for the design, development and deployment of digital resources and environments that are at the heart of TELLAL’s methodologies. Sheryl came to the UAE, from a teaching and professional Development role in New Zealand, in 2009 and worked as part of a GEMS PPP with the Abu Dhabi Education Council, training teachers in UAE national schools to support the implementation of a new curriculum. Sheryl has more than 25 years’ experience teaching as a primary generalist and secondary Media and Film Studies specialist. Sheryl has a Masters in Technology and Learning Design, and is able to use the opportunity to apply her study to her work at Tellal, using state of the art tools and methodologies to support both pre-service and in-service teacher training.
As part of her research Sheryl has worked with the University of Central Florida to explore the educational use of mixed reality simulations as means of linking theory with practice in ways that can transform the teaching and learning relationship for participants. Pedagogical skills and practices are rehearsed in a simulated environment where intervention is embedded through the use of instructional coaches. The situated learning allows for reflection-in action and a deconstruction of the constituent parts of teaching that lead to making evident areas of challenge and discovering strategies to improve them. TELLAL uses simulations to support pre-service and in service teacher training and both educational and corporate leadership and customer service training.
