Jim has been Deputy Principal and Head of Secondary School at VISS since August 2014. Before this, Jim has taught in a number of UK state and independent schools in his 25+ year career, including over five years as Headmaster of Shoreham College, an all-through primary and secondary school near Brighton, England. A trained physics teacher, Jim has also specialised in the use of IT in education, serving on national advisory committees, writing articles and speaking at conferences on this and other topics. During his UK headship he has been an active member of the Independent Schools’ Association (ISA) serving on the national executive and chairing its Academic Policy Committee through a period of extensive curriculum change in the UK. He has collaborated with Apple as a trainer since 2015.
Schools around the world have had to face the pandemic around the world, dealing with transition through lockdown, distance learning, return to onsite learning under restrictions and beyond. Victoria International School of Sharjah, a leading Australian/IB International school in the UAE made the transition to full distance learning with two weeks’ notice and then worked through the summer of 2020 to be ready to bring their students back onsite. What was it like for the students though? You will hear from two of our students who describe the challenges they faced and how the school and its students worked through the crisis to ensure the wellbeing and academic progress of all.
